The Science Of Flight

I mastered the science of flight
By reading these volumes in my bed at night
But that's not how you learn to fly.

Two flight discs and an air foil cape
Create enough lift for a quick escape
Inner ear sensors, wing tip connect
I have all of those boxes checked.

Still, I'm praying for an aftershock
Fall off from that cosmic rock
Isn't there enough to spare for me from this tired ground?

I have the scholarship to go
I'm more than a clerk you know
I just want to answer one call from the police bed radio.

To hear my name
When I'm flying through the night again
Feel the rush of the city air
Doing my part for good.

To see my name
Headline of the New York Times
Solving evil doer's crimes.

But then I am back here in this shop.

I mastered the art of falling in love
With things I can't have and things I can't do.

Twenty years later I'm the lowest denominator
In a failing shop on Fifth Avenue.

And there's nothing to show for me
No chance at a PHD
But if I succeed the world will see me differently.

When I'm flying through the night again

But then I am back here.

I'll do anything to fly away
I'll do anything to fly with her
If I never fly I will never be satisfied
It's the one thing I can do to turn my life around.

If I do this right
I'll harness the science of flight
And fly.
