Kalevan Kansa

Kerran illalla Kalevan kansa
Saapui niemehen nimettömään
Matkan vaikean vaivoistansa
Yöpyi rannalle lepäjämään
Sytytti savunsa saarelmalle
Tulensa niemyen nenähän toi
Levitti lehviä kuusten alle
Louhten lomahan majansa loi.

Vaan kun aamulla päivyt koitti
Valaen vesille kultiaan
Silloin helkähti sydänten kielet
Humahti rinnassa " isien puut".

Kohta tietäjä lyylin laittoi
Saneli pyhäksi salmen suun
Kummun kuusesta oksat taittoi
Julisti vuorella jumalan puun
Lepikön aitasi Hiiden haaksi
Asuma-ahoksi vainajain
Nimitti niemyen Suomenmaaksi
Ukolle uhreja teurastain.

Vaan kun iltasin kumpuloilla
Päivän laskua katseltiin
Tai kun erässä nuotioilla
Otavan sarvia outeltiin
Silloinpa helisi kannelkielet
Kautta kumpujen soitot soi
Silloin sankarit vakaamielet
Sormet sormien lomahan loi
Silloin loihtuja, laulelmoita
Partahuulilta humisi vaan
Alkusyntyjä syviä noita
Peruja kansojen kehtomaan
Vipusen virsiä, satuja sammon
Lovessa käyntejä loihtijain
Kuvia kummia Kalman kammon
Ituja Tuonelan tutkelmain.

Luonnon lapsena kasvoi kansa
Nukkui honkien huountaan
Uneksi uudesta onnestansa
Heräsi aaltojen loiskinaan
Huuhtia raaten, kaskia kaaten
Voimoa elämän nisistä joi
Metsän Mielikin povella maaten
Luonnon luottehet kuulla voi.

Siellä suojana hongan juuri
Taivon tähtöset päällä pään
Kasvoi Suomen sukuni suuri
Yleni henki heimon tään
Kuuhut kulki taivahalla
Kuusten lomitse kurkistain
Kansa se kasvoi kuusten alla
Käköset oksilla kukkui vain.

Part II: The Folk of Kaleva

Verse I:
One eve the folk of Kaleva
Arrived at the nameless cape
From the efforts of their trek
Took rest by the sand
Raised their smokes on the isle
Brought their fire to the beachhead
Spread leaves below the pines
Fixed huts amidst the wild.

Interlude:
But when the day dawned
To paint the waters golden
Tingled the strings of hearts
In chests swooshed the “trees of fathers”.

Verse II:
Soon a sage sang the wording
Called sacred the strait
Snapped branches from a hill-pine
Announced a god-tree at the mountain
Hedged the alders as the realm of Hiisi
A resting-glade for the deceased
Named Finland the cape
Butchering sacrifice for Ukko.

But at the evenings, on the hill
When men looked the fall of the day
Or at the campfires in the wilds
Searched for the starry signs
Then jingled the kantele-strings
The playing rang through the lands
Then heroes with steady hearts
Let fingers between fingers
Then spells and songs
Were let loose from bearded lips
Deep stories from dawn-times
Beginnings of the people were told
Chants of Vipunen, tales of the Sampo
Wife-hunts of spell singers
Strange visions of the dread Kalma
Story-seeds brought from the banks of Tuonela.

Verse III:
As children of nature grew the people
Slept as the birches waved
Dreamt of the new fortune
Woke to the lap of the waves
Slashing and burning the pines, reaving the trees
Drinking strength from the teats of life
Resting by Meilikkis' bosom
One can hear the flow of the wild.

Chorus:
There shielded the birch root
Starry skies helmed the head
Grew my grand people of Finland
The spirit of this tribe rose
Moons travelled above
Peeking past the pines
Folk grew under those trees
Cuckoos calling from the boughs.
